The Illinois Beach State Park parallels the Lake Michigan shoreline from south of Zion to the Wisconsin State line. Separating the Northern and Southern units is the Commonwealth Edison power plant. The terrain varies from open beach and dunes to wooded area. The sandy ridges are crowned by black oak forests with an open savanna-Iike appearance.
