From Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of 1755 Dr. Johnson’s dictionary defined the English language for 150 years. It was the lexicon of choice for Wordsworth, Coleridge, Dickens, the Brontes, and the Brownings. Hardy and Wilde would have felt naked without it. The dictionaries we use today owe their form to Johnson’s eighteenth-century prototype. With a word on the front of each card and its definition and etymology, accompanied by usage examples, on the back, this deck puts forth forty-eight specimens of language that the reader will be compelled to spring on a friend. Some are still with us but define different things than they did in Johnson’s day (you won’t find catsup at Denny’s, and you really wouldn’t want a tattoo on your shoulder.) Others have disappeared from common parlance because their function has fallen away (people don’t discuss their pledgets anymore).
