The cost of floor coverings is increasing, so it makes sense to protect your investment. Commercial grade carpet is thinner today, and carpet casters make it easier to roll across its surface, but carpet fibers and backing are not designed to handle the extreme, concentrated weight generated by casters. For comparison, this concentrated weight can be up to 100 times that of a typical footstep.
Over time, unprotected carpet will lose fibers and break down. A chair mat spreads the downforce of the casters to prevent damage to the carpet.
Chair mats are shipped rolled in order to fit inside UPS size cartons. They will assume their normal shape, which is flat, but that may take a number of days or even two weeks in colder weather. The chair mat must be placed face-down with weight on top of it for the first few days. The chair mat will eventually flatten completely with no sign of distortion.
