These self-threading needles are like magic when you have to fish thread tails from one side of your machine applique to the other. They resemble the letter 'H' on top and all you do is lay the thread on top and pop it into the eye. Kind of like flossing your teeth. I use them to bring threads to the back and fish them under my applique stitches at the end of a seam. I also use them to hide machine quilting threads inside the quilt when I end off.
